THE coming election will be a 'game-changer' for the opposition as many Singaporeans from all walks of life have come forward to join the fraternity, said a Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate on Friday.
Expressing confidence that the opposition could win 'more than a seat or two,' academic James Gomez told reporters after submitting his political donation forms at the Elections Department: 'I think the opposition fraternity, on its own as a whole, is poised to score a significant victory against the ruling party.'
Asked how many more seats the opposition could win in the May 7 election, Dr Gomez, 46, said: 'It would depend on the swing of votes against the ruling party. It has been put as high as 10 per cent, and this would certainly translate to a significant number of seats.'
With Dr Gomez at the Elections Department were two other SDP candidates - entrepreneur Jarrod Luo, 27, and retired lawyer and author Teo Soh Lung, 62.
The SDP has unveiled 11 candidates and said it is gunning for the Holland-Bukit Timah and Sembawang group representation constituencies (GRCs), as well as the Yuhua and Bukit Panjang single-seat wards.
