The seven time Formula One champion, Michael Schumacher, was disappointed with his performance in the qualifying session of the Australian Grand Prix, which will host the inaugural race of the 2011 season tomorrow on Sunday 27thMarch. The veteran driver finished 11th overall and failed to go beyond Q2 in his Mercedes.
Schumacher stated, “After winter testing coming to the first race we had expected certainly a different performance so naturally there is some disappointment. I mean the times we did in testing were very clear and we had a good interpretation.”
The German further added, “We faced more problems here than at the test with several issues throughout the whole weekend. We now have to look deeply into it to understand why it turned out to be like this, because for the moment we are not where we wanted to be.”
Compared to Schumacher, his team-mate Nico Rosberg had a better time, as he qualified for the seventh position on the grid. However, the younger German wasn’t happy to be in that place, as he claimed that the team was expecting a lot more today.
Team principal Ross Brawn admitted that his team had a number of issues with the car this weekend. He claimed that race day would be a lot better, as Mercedes has a good race pace.
After the final pre-season test at Barcelona, Mercedes proved to be a very competitive team. They were running an interim car prior to the final test, but the upgraded version was impressive, as Schumacher clocked the best time of the winter testing at Barcelona.
After such a promising show, Mercedes would have anticipated a much more competitive run at Melbourne. The German giants will be looking forward to get rid of the technical issues faced by their drivers today in order to finish better in the race.
Although it didn’t prove to be an ideal day for most of the Germans in Formula One, there was one who dominated the entire qualifying session. Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel, started the season from where he had left in 2010. The reigning champion took the top spot in all qualifying sessions, setting the pole for tomorrow.
