Maggie Daley, wife of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and gentle promoting cultural and educational programs of the city, died Thursday. He was 68.

The former first lady of Chicago, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, died on Thursday night, said family spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard told The Associated Press.

Daley had a reserved and dignified presence beside her husband during his 22 eventful years as mayor.

Heard said Daley was surrounded by his wife and children when he died shortly after 6:00 pm.

"The mayor and his family would like to thank the people of Chicago for all the kindness they have shown for Mrs. Daley over the years and appreciate your prayers at this time," added the spokeswoman.

When he first learned she had breast cancer in June 2002, Daley said shocked.

"But you get up and go. I'm not alone. There are many people who have gone through this," Daley said in the weeks after diagnosis.

Rahm Emanuel, successor of Mayor Daley said Chicago lost "a warm and gentle woman who contributed greatly to our city."

When Richard Daley was elected to his first term as mayor in 1989, thanked his wife in his acceptance speech and said it was the "best promoter in the family." She was with him at the press conference in September 2010 when he announced he would not seek another term. Daley left the hall in May 2011.

Born as Margaret Corbett, graduated as a historian at the University of Dayton and received honorary degrees from Columbia College in Chicago and Catholic Theological Union. He is survived by her husband and three children.
