Dennis Davern said Friday the program "Today" on NBC made a mistake by not telling the truth about the events that led to the death of the actress on the weekend of Thanksgiving Day in 1981.
The yacht Splendour was on an island with Wagner, Wood and co-star of "Brainstorm" Christopher Walken on board.
Davern says he urged homicide investigators Los Angeles County to reopen the case.
The Sheriff's Department announced Thursday that the case is opened again.
Davern said he believed that Wagner deliberately kept the death investigation in private and who believes that Wagner is responsible for the death of Wood.
