Veteran Tamil actor Ravichandran died on Monday at a private hospital here where he was being treated for nearly ten days for a lung infection. Doctors said he did not respond to treatment and his condition had deteriorated over the last two days. He was on a life support system.

"His pulse and BP dropped drastically. We could do nothing," a doctor said. He was 71 and is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons.

A popular hero of the 1960s and 70s, most of whose films were huge hits Ravichandran acted aside erstwhile heroes like MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. Among his latest films were "Arunachalam" with Rajinikanth and "Pammal K Sambandam" withKamal Haasan. He made his debut as a hero in Sridhar's "Kadhalikka Neramillai" which eventually became a huge hit.

Ravichandran, who was last seen in "Kanden Kadhalai" as the grandfather of actress Thamannaah, had a style of his own. "His gestures were very popular among us. He had a style of his own when it came to walking. I think this made many of the youngsters imitate him those days. He also had a lot of fans in Tamil Nadu because of his stunning performancees," said K Sundar, a fan of Ravichandran.

Talking to The Times of India, veteran writer Ashokamitran said that even though Ravichandran did not make himself so distinguished as an actor, he was very popular among the youngsters. "A lot of movies he acted in became huge hits in those days. He will always be remembered for his different roles," he said. An alumnus of St Joseph's College in Tiruchi, Ravichandran used to spend most of his time in Malaysia.
