On Saturday the 2011 Filmfare Awards ceremony commenced at HICC in Hyderabad. There were several big winners on the night including Allu Arjun and Daggubati Rana.
The original Filmfare Awards, first started in 1954, are held annually to honor the artistic and technical achievements of Hindi language film industry professionals. Since last year's show, there have been 37 awards given out including those similar to the Oscars, like Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The differences come with several awards given for acting debuts, and also for "playback singer" roles in movies. On Saturday, it was the Filmfare South Awards for 2011 which recognized the various achievements of those from the regions of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
The latest Filmfare Awards winners for the South included Mynaa, winning Best Film, Vasanthabalan winning Best Director, Vikram winning Best Actor and Anjali winning Best Actress in the Tamil region. For Telugu it was a sweep of the top 4 major awards for the movie Vedam. It won the Best Film award, Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi won Best Director, Allu Arjun grabbed Best Actor and Anushka Shetty (pictured) took home Best Actress. Meanwhile in the Malayalam region, Pranchiyettan & the Saint won Best Film, its director Ranjith won as well as its lead actor, Mammootty. However, Mamta Mohanas won the Best Actress Award for Kadha. A complete list has been compiled at the Filmfare Wiki.
These awards are not something that many in the United States celebrate, but they are certainly important for Tollywood and Bollywood fans as well as those working in the industries. These are very similar to the Golden Globes and Oscars in terms of honoring fantastic work in film. Many congratulations go out to all of Saturday's big Filmfare Awards 2011 winners for continued success in their careers!
