Piper Perabo

With a successful first season (and a Golden Globe nomination for star Piper Perabo) under its belt, Covert Affairs is ready to return to television with new episodes this summer. The show is likely to bring back a whole lot of spying, secrets and romance (hence the title), but what else can we expect?

Stars Piper Perabo (Annie Walker) and Christopher Gorham (Augie Anderson) were kind enough to share some of the details with reporters.
First of all, the show will resume right where it left off at the end of season 1, following a mission that ended with a bullet-riddled Ben Mercer (Eion Bailey). Annie, no longer quite the rookie that she once was, gets to step up a little more as a CIA agent. According to Perabo, "Annie's getting larger, more difficult assignments ... the stakes are much higher." In addition to managing her rather complicated relationship with Ben, Annie will be out in the field more often, running operations and handling assets.

Annie's personal life is, of course, intertwined with everything in her professional life. Piper Perabo was somewhat ambivalent about Annie and "bad-boy" Ben's relationship: "Ben ... is ... not that trustworthy of a guy. You know, in season 1, he kind of puts Annie in a lot of dangerous situations and doesn't help her out."

But that's OK. Annie has the rest of the cast to take her mind off Ben. According to Perabo: "At least she's got Augie in the office, and he's so easy on the eyes... There's certainly quite distracting men around if Ben doesn't make it."

Augie has plenty going on of his own. In addition to whatever he gets up to on his off-time, Augie will share a romance with guest star Rebecca Mader at some point in the season. Meanwhile, the blind agent escapes the office for the field in order to assist Annie on a mission, and we'll get a chance to see the old Augie -- before he lost his sight -- during a flashback episode set in Istanbul.

Speaking of Istanbul, Covert Affairs will be heading to plenty of exotic locales in its second season. Paris (seen in the season's second episode) and Puerto Rico join the Turkish city in providing settings for the various spy activities.

Covert Affairs premieres on USA at 10pm on Tuesday, June 7.
