The Sunday Mirror reports that Jonathan and his dog were travelling across Russia on the Trans-Siberian railway as part of a new travel series and despite the show apparently being a life-long dream of Jonathan's, filming has now been cancelled as the star comes to terms with his loss.
Mr Pickle, who had become something of a national treasure after being talked about regularly on Ross' Friday-night talk show, is said to have died on the train itself.
Although Jonathan hasn't spoken openly of the incident, the star tweeted earlier today: 'Many thanks to everyone for the kind words. Still a bit too upset to really talk about it but thanks to all.'
A friend of Mr Ross commented, 'One of the things Jonathan was really looking forward to after he left the BBC was getting to do a few more off-the-wall productions. Top of his list was this trip with Mr Pickle. He was incredibly devoted to Mr Pickle.
'Jonathan doesn't really like talking about it so the details are a little sketchy, but it seems he died while on the train. To say Jonathan was devastated is an understatement, he was totally distraught. Jonathan thought about making the trip alone, but just couldn't bring himself to do it.'
