THE People's Action Party's Charles Chong has won 51.01 per cent of the votes in this SMC with 22,069 voters, beating Mr Yee Jenn Jong from the Workers' Party, who had 48.99 per cent of the votes.
In the 2006 General Election, the PAP candidate won 65.01 per cent of the vote against the WP's 34.99 per cent.
Speaking to supports on Saturday night, Mr Chong said thanked voters for having confidence in him, despite his being new to the area. He had taken over from former PAP MP Chan Soo Sen.
Mr Chong pledged to spend the next five years winning over the residents in Joo Chiat.
He also asked his supporters to 'have a good rest tomorrow'.
'Monday, we have to start work,' he said.
His opponent Mr Yee, who is entering politics for the first time, said he started off tentatively, but added that he had managed to cover every house and condominium unit that had opened its doors to the opposition party.
