Get ready to see lots of Belgian Malinoises prancing up and down your neighborhood street soon, because apparently this is the breed of dog that went in with the Navy SEAL team to capture and kill Osama bin Laden.Is there anything those dogs can't do?
The only non-human member of the Navy SEAL team, the pooch was strapped to a SEAL as the team was lowered from a helicopter (Aw!). Like the other members of the team, the dog's identity is unknown.
Belgian Malinoises have long been touted for their uncanny ability to sniff out enemy troops -- sometimes up to two miles away. According toGeneral Petraeus, there is no match for the furry friends:
The capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine.
Aw, they're so cute. But, as a serious dog lover, this makes me a little sad.
I know, I know, human lives are more important than canine, but I can't help but feel a twinge of melancholy when I think of these poor pups in the trenches. I mean, not to sound ridiculous or Pollyana or anything, but these guys (or girls) didn't enlist.
There are few things I can think of that are sadder than one of these dogs getting shot (and possibly killed) in war. Please don't call me a crazy person, because I have a very firm grip on reality, and I realize that a soldier dying is more tragic. But as I type these words, and my little doggy sits at my feet, I am almost brought to tears at the thought of anyone injuring him.
That said, there is no doubt in my mind that we are going to see an onslaught of Belgian Malinoises at the local dog park. Think about it -- you're debating what kind of dog to get when you hear that a certain breed had a hand in the death of one of the most dangerous terrorists of all time. You're totally going with a Malinois! Unless you're awesome and like little, foo-foo doggies like me.
