Singapore Parliament Dissolved

Singapore Parliament
Singapore's Parliament has been dissolved, setting the stage for a general election in May.
President S.R. Nathan issued an election proclamation through the government gazette shortly after he dissolved the country's 11th Parliament on Tuesday.
It stipulated April 27 as the nomination day. Returning Officer Yam Ah Mee announced later that the polling would be held on May 7.
As many as 2.31 million voters are eligible to elect 87 Members of Parliament in 27 constituencies - 12 single-member constituencies and 15 group representation constituencies (GRCs).
The People's Action Party swept the last election in 2006, the most-pitched battle since 1988, winning 82 of the 84 seats.
The ruling party is expected to face stiff challenge from Opposition parties including the Workers' Party, the Singapore People's Party, the Singapore Democratic Party, the National Solidarity Party, the Reform Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance.
