Quebec
Six Greenpeace protesters were arrested early Wednesday morning during a demonstration that saw some protesters chain themselves to the front doors of Hydro Quebec on Rene-Levesque Boulevard.
Roughly 20 environmentalists shouted slogans and waved signs in front of the company’s headquarters at 6:30 a.m.
Their message was clear: Shut down the Gentilly-2 nuclear plant, which is located near Trois-Rivieres, Que.
“Greenpeace is closing the doors to Hydro-Québec’s head office because that’s what the government corporation needs to do with Gentilly-2. The citizens of Quebec shouldn’t be forced to live with nuclear risks when solutions exist,” said Eric Darier, director of Greenpeace in Quebec.
“Quebec needs clean energy, not nuclear energy. It’s up to Thierry Vandal, President of Hydro-Québec, to recommend a single option to Premier Jean Charest: end Quebec’s experiment with risky nuclear power,” he continued.
The protest lasted until 8 a.m. and briefly shut down the Hydro Quebec building.
The arrested protesters face charges linked to mischief and trespassing.
Quebec has allotted $2 billion to refurbish the plant, but environmental groups, including Greenpeace, are fighting to have it closed.
