General Election 2011

General Election 2011
Singapore WILL face general elections with Polling Day falling on May 7.

What's new about these elections: with the advent of technology, social media and its array of new tools will be on display for use by all and sundry.

Singapore appears prepared for this, having recently passed new laws which permits and regulates what it calls election advertising.

The laws are not easy to understand, however. For example, non-citizens are not allowed to partake in publishing election advertising. Then there are different rules applied to different persons (political parties/candidates vs non political parties/candidates). Finally, to top it off, different rules apply to when the publication is made. There was even confusion amongst some members of parliament while the laws were being debated, so what about us lesser mortals?

So, go grab your statutes books, it's the Parliamentary Elections Act and the Parliamentary Elections (Election Advertising) Regulations that you need.

P.S. Some of the legal maneuvers may have begun: videos posted on YouTube have removed logos presented in the videos after being threatened with lawsuits.
