After setting the bar at a 1'35 dead, Lewis Hamilton watched while others tried to emulate, or better the McLaren drivers effort. Jenson Button came close with a time below the 1'36, as did the Australian Mark Webber in the Red Bull, while both their fathers sat on tenterhooks in the garages urging their sons on to faster speeds.

Even after marginally improving on his own time, Lewis Hamilton was informed by his team that his incredible lap had been bettered by Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull, emphasising his position as World Champion and raw talent to produce the goods when required with a time of 1'34.870 and set up the grid with the Red Bulls and McLarens line astern with the British drivers conceding the advantage to the energy drink cars on the cleaner side of the circuit.

Here's hoping the rain stays away on Sunday? Or maybe not?
