Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan
Police in the central Asian republic of Azerbaijan have arrested dozens of opposition activists as they attempted to stage a rally in the capital Baku.
The planned gathering had failed to receive approval from the authorities.
Hundreds of protesters were trying to get to the city’s Fountain Square when they were detained.
They chanted “resign” and “freedom” as riot police forced them onto nearby buses.
The calls for resignation were aimed at President Ilham Aliyef, a member of the same family that has ruled Azerbaijan for nearly two decades.
Opposition activists claim a thousand people attempted to take part in the rally and that around two hundred were arrested.
