Liverpool are keen on bringing in at least one winger this summer to provide ammunition for £35million striker Andy Carroll and have been linked with several players who can play out wide, including Downing's Villa’s team-mate Ashley Young.
Young is believed to be set to join Manchester United and according to theNews of the World, Reds boss Kenny Dalglish has turned his attention to another £10m-rated Downing.
But the Scot could face competition from Arsenal, with manager Arsene Wenger said to have identified Downing as a potential summer signing.
Should the Gunners make a move for the former Middlesbrough winger then that may well signal the exit from the Emirates of Andrei Arshavin, who has been linked with a move to Juventus or former club Zenit in recent weeks.
According to Sunday's report, Arsenal would be prepared to sell the likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Denilson and Carlos Vela to free up funds for Downing.
