Itanium

Itanium
Oracle announced a few days back that it was ending its support to Intel’s Itanium processor, stating that Itanium was at its end, sources revealed.

The software firm’s decision reportedly has shocked HP whose majority of servers is based on the Itanium processor. Microsoft and Red Hat too had earlier ended support for Itanium.

But Intel asserted its support and development to the Itanium denying Oracle’s statements that Itanium was nearing its end, sources reported.

Oracle’s decision has left Itanium users in the middle of the lurch as it will cost them millions of dollars in lost productivity, sources informed.

According to experts, consumers who are using Oracle-Itanium servers will have to look for options to maximize their performance.

Itanium was in the news only few weeks back when HP and Intel in a white paper said that enterprises which started to use Itanium Sparc servers reduced 41% of their total cost. HP also has been saying that “customer satisfaction has been high with Itanium”.

It is being said that Oracle’s decision to end support for Itanium was influenced by Mark Hurd joining Oracle and its acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
