“We learned an improved from the previous week,” Moore said. “We have a young group of student-athletes and we were excited to get in a set of good races.”
Syracuse battled the conditions and the Terries to win the first race of the day. SU’s third varsity eight crossed the line in 8:23, 12 seconds faster than BU.
“The third varsity eight crew took a step forward,” Moore said. “They are a young crew and did a great job handling the conditions.”
Boston won the varsity four with a time of 8:30. SU finished in 9:01, 12 seconds faster than the second Terrier crew.
The Orange second varsity eight also finished second in 8:13. BU crossed the line in 8:02.
The Boston varsity eight won the Kittell Cup by three second, finishing the course in 7:53. The Kittell Cup goes to the winner of the annual Syracuse-Boston University varsity eight race. Donated by former SU rower Kristin Bidwell '90, the Kittell Cup is named after former associate director of athletics Janet Kittell for her support of the women's rowing program.
“The varsity improved today,” Moore said. “They were down early and could have looked at the conditions and packed it in for the day, but they did not. They closed on Boston in the second 1,000 meters, showing great mental disposition for a young crew.”
Saturday’s race also marked the first spring dual race for Moore. A six-time NCAA Champion and U.S. Junior National Team coach, Moore came to Syracuse after a very successful 11-year tenure at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
Moore and the Orange return to the water on Saturday, April 2, traveling to Derby, Conn. to battle defending National Champion Yale and rival Cornell.
