Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced changes to his cabinet Wednesday, giving added responsibilities to Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who was appointed Deputy Prime Minister.
Mr. Lee also appointed as the country's new foreign-affairs minister K. Shanmugam, who retains his post at the Law Ministry.
The prime minister announced the changes at a news conference for local media. His office later issued a statement to foreign journalists.
The changes to the cabinet come after the ruling People's Action Party won 81 of 87 parliamentary seats this month in Singapore's general election, though with just 60.1% of the popular vote, its smallest portion since the city-state's independence in 1965. In the previous election, in 2006, the party won nearly 67% of the vote.
Two cabinet ministers—Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hua, minister in the prime minister's office and second minister for finance and transport—lost their parliamentary seats to opposition Workers' Party candidates in the elections.
